The metabolic studies are conducted at the Department of Medicine of the Helsinki University Central Hospital, first on Unioninkatu, then on Kasarminkatu and now on Haartmaninkatu at the Meilahti hospital. There performs follow-up studies on the Botnia families. In addition, concentrate on so called mixed diabetes types: hereditary MODY-diabetes, LADA-diabetes and interaction between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. During 2001 we will start a new project on families with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

The laboratory has recently moved to a new biomedical center, Biomedicum by the Meilahti hospital. We partticipate in the reserach program of Molecular Medicine. Since 2001 the Botnia Study is also part of Folkhälsan Research Center.

The laboratory serves both as a molecular biology laboratory and a central laboratory for the Botnia Study. All samples form the other center are sent to Helsinki to be analysed for e.g. serum insulin, C-peptide and free fatty acids as well as urine albumin excretion rate.

In 1994 a second part of the Botnia Study was begun, the so called SIB Study, in which families having at least two siblings with type 2 diabetes where recruited through newspaper advertisements. Together these two parts make it possible to replicate all findings in another Finnish population, which increases the value of the research results. Mikko Lehtovirta and Carol Forsblom have mainly been in charge of the SIB Study in Helsinki, and dr. Martin Carlsson and research nurse Ylva Wessman in Malmö.
