The Botnia Study was begun here in 1995 by the head of the Department of Internal Medicine of the Malm hospital, Bo Isomaa and laboratory nurse Leena Sarelin. The district's special feature is the large share of MODY-diabetes and a follow-up study is conducted on the carriers of the MODY-gene mutations. A study is also being performed on the complications of the different subtypes of diabetes.
