Mustasaari was known already in 1348. The town Vaasa was founded in this area in 1606, but after the fire the new Vaasa was founded on its present location. This constantly growing coastal town has 1500 km of coastline and 16 500 inhabitants (75% Swedish-speaking and 25% Finnish-speaking)

The Botnia Study was started in Mustasaaressa in 1990 by the chief physician of the public health center Björn-Olof Ehrnström, laboratory nurse Susanne Salmela and diabetes nurse Helena Iilahti.
