The municipality of Maalahti was founded in 1607. Half of the 1022 km2 surface is covered by water. Ninety percent of the 5750 inhabitants are Swedish-speaking.
The Botnia Study strated in the Maalahti and Korsnäs district in 1990. At the beginning dr. Börje Snickars led the study, but Michael Nissén has taken over the task. from the beginning of 2001. The diabetes nurse Lisbeth Åkerman and laboratory nurse Inga-Britt Stenback are in charge of the patient examinations and interviews.
