NÄRPIÖ

Närpiö (970 km2) was a known rural district already in 1331 and it became a town 1993. The town is known for its many greenhouses and especially for its tomato production, which covers 60% of the entire Finnish production. Närpiö has 9856 mostly Swedish-speaking (92.5 %) inhabitants.

The Botnia Study was started in Närpiö in 1990, but many of the patients had already participated in Leif Groop's earlier research projects in the 1980's. As in most of the Botnia-centers, the patients and their families are examined at their local public health center by the local Botnia-group.
