Vaasa was well-known already in the 14th century, but the town , which is named after the Swedish royal family, was in fact not founded until 1606. The district used to be a busy commerce and shipping town. During the civil war in Finland Vaasa served as the capital of Finland in early 1918. Nowadays Vaasa has 57 000 inhabitants, 72% Finnish-speaking and 27% Swedish-speaking. There is a university and two institutes (Österbottens högskola
and Svenska Handelshögskolan i Vasa).
