20th Anniversary 2011

Welcome to the Botnia-study´s 20 year anniversary in the Osthrobothnia Region which will take place in Vasa and surroundings in May 2011 and contains of three different parts; for the public audience, for health professionals and for researchers.

The aim of the Botnia study is to identify genetic and environmental factors which lead to Type 2 Diabetes. Since 1990 we have recruited patients and their familiy members who suffers from type 2 diabetes to five different primary care centres in Osthrobothnia (Malax, Korsholm, Närpes, Jakobstad and Vasa).

During the anniversary the Botnia study and its results will be presented in different contexts.

  • Thursday May 19 the Botnia study will be presented at Vasa hospital District´s diabetes day for the region´s physicians, health professionals and decision makers. The same evening there will also be lectures open for the public.
  • Friday May 20 a scientific symposium will take place, where several leading researchers within the field of the genetics in diabetes will give lectures, including researchers from the Broad Institute in Boston, which is one of the world´s leading genetic research institutes and an important collaborator for the Botnia study. A gala dinner will be arranged at the University.
  • Saturday May 21 a work-shop will be arranged in Närpes, where young researchers will present their work. So far more than 30 doctoral theses have been published based on material from the Botnia study.
